When we look back over the history of the automobile, there are a few particular eras that stand out as real high points for driving enthusiasts. It is safe to say the mid-2000s falls squarely into one of those eras and the B7 Audi RS4 is a perfect embodiment of why. It was at this point that manufacturers were producing very dependable and capable, cars that still feel fast in a modern context. But in contrast to modern cars, this was before the introduction of many of the driver's aids and safety features that remove some of the excitement behind the wheel that enthusiasts seek out. Along with these computer-controlled features came the increased use of forced induction to make power which, although easier to put down big numbers on paper, the excitement of winding them out to redline isn't there like it is in a naturally aspirated car.

Produced in 2007, this B7 Audi RS4 is a perfect meeting point between an engaging, visceral driver's car and a practical, useful vehicle for every day. Finished in a rare shade of Lava Gray Pearl, this RS4 shows just 44,629 miles from new and is in stunning condition throughout. Lava Gray Pearl is an absolutely stunning color in person and photos do not do it justice- the sheer quantity of metal flake in the paint makes the car gleam when the sun hits it and on the RS4 in particular, highlights the flared fenders and unique bumper treatments. The car remains in largely stock condition and it really shows how right Audi got these cars out of the box- the original wheels in their dark gray finish fit the look of the car perfectly and the wide, black finish oval exhausts at the rear subtly hint at the performance on offer but only to those who know what they are looking at.

The interior of the RS4 shows Audi's commitment to producing the best interiors in class and this car is no exception. Black leather covers the Recaro seats and features white piping throughout which gives a bit of pop to the dark inside and makes the seats look remarkably upscale. All of the RS4s were built with gloss carbon fiber interior trim on the dash, doors, and center console which adds some sporty flare and is a really great alternative to wood or stainless found on the lower trim level cars. The gauges in front of the driver are signature Audi, featuring a pair of large black dials with white writing and glowing red needles that are a pleasure to watch spin around toward the 8,000 rpm redline.

What truly separates this car from anything newer coming out of the Audi factory is what lies under the hood. A 4.2-liter dual overhead cam, all-aluminum V8 that will happily wind out to 8,250 rpm. Producing 420 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, the engine is exceedingly powerful all throughout the rev range and produces 90% of its peak torque between 2,250 and 7,500 rpm. When paired with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive, the RS4 offers a driving experience that has never been replicated by any other Audi. In period, journalists frequently discuss being turned off by the car's weight on paper, but once they got behind the wheel, their opinions quickly changed as they marveled at the car's effortless power and poise on both road and track, where once you start pushing the car, its weight begins to disappear.

Built between 2006 and 2008, the Audi only built 10,000 RS4s worldwide with just 2,000 of those making their way stateside. These cars are so special and unique that they really didn't depreciate much after they were new and values have only been on the upswing in recent years. If you are looking for a car that can act as a family hauler during the week and an ideal canyon carver on the weekends, it's hard to find much out there that would beat a B7 RS4.
