Description

BMW has always had a reputation for building fun-to-drive and luxurious sports coupes and sedans. When they began the M division, they took the already exciting cars and turned the performance up a notch. They used race car technology to create a lineup of truly sought-after vehicles. In 2011, BMW decided to give the M treatment to the 1 series coupe, taking a comfortable, quick daily driver and turning it into a performance icon and one of the most desirable cars of the 2010s. Using the 1 Series tii Concept that was shown at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show as inspiration, the BMW engineers took a 135i and set to work changing the engine, chassis, and bodywork to bring it up to M Performance standards.

Power for the 1M was to be provided by a twin-turbocharged inline-6 and although the 135i shared the same basic engine, this version was comprehensively changed to offer 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. What made this engine so exciting was that full torque was available from just 1,500 rpm all the way to 4,500 rpm and an over-boost function could temporarily add an extra 37 lb-ft to bring the total to 369 lb-ft. The suspension was heavily modified with new subframes which increased the front track by 2.9 inches and the rear by 1.8 inches and allowed for wider performance tires. Because of this change, the standard 135i bodywork wouldn't cover the wheels so a striking set of fender flares were added which gave the car a much more aggressive look and helped differentiate the 1M from any other 1 series. Upon its release, the car media world was head over heels for the car and it received a host of awards both officially and unofficially as the car of the year. Its fun, tail-happy nature felt like a return to form for BMW and although they built the M name off of naturally aspirated motors, people loved the power delivery and rapid performance offered by the twin-turbocharged unit. Only built for one year, BMW sold just 983 1Ms in the United States, making it one of the rarest cars from the brand to make its way stateside.

This 1M is finished in Alpine White 3 over the signature 1M interior of black Boston leather with orange accent stitching throughout. With a build date of September 27, 2011, the car has spent time in Colorado, California, and most recently, Florida. When new, the car was ordered with both the Convenience and Premium Package which equips the vehicle with navigation, Comfort Access, auto-dimming mirrors, power front seats with driver's memory, iPod integration, and numerous other luxury features. It is clear from looking at the car that it has been immaculately kept from new with bodywork that is free of any major blemishes and an interior that barely shows creasing on the leather seats. To keep it looking great for years to come, Xpel paint protection film has been installed on the entire front end, fenders, door cups, and along the edge of the trunk. At this time the car shows just 27,485 miles and the original M document folder is included in the sale. As an indicator of how popular and rare the 1M was, even when they were a year or two old, they had barely depreciated from their original sticker price, and in the years since, prices have only been on the upswing. Out of the 983 1Ms that made it stateside, the number that have not been modified or crashed is steadily decreasing making a clean, stock example like this one all the more desirable.
