Description

1997 BMW M3 Coupe

It makes sense that values for the E36 M3 have been on the rise in recent years. With its classic good looks, sublime driving dynamics, and smooth, outstanding-sounding inline-6 engine, the E36 M3 was destined to become a classic when it was brand new but only recently have they truly been receiving the respect they deserve. For years they weren't worth much money and the vast majority of cars fell into the wrong hands- poorly modified or wrecked- and finding a truly no stories car is difficult. That is just one of the things that makes this car so special.

First sold in August of 1997, this E36 M3 is finished in a gorgeous color scheme of Hellrot Red over Black leather interior and shows just 45,000 miles from new. As previously mentioned, finding an M3 that has been pampered its entire life is nearly impossible and, although this car has a few modifications, they are all desirable and by well-known brands and only enhance the experience. Walking around the car you can almost immediately tell how clean it is with barely a scratch or rock chip to note. The red paint shines like it is six months old and looks especially nice when contrasted with the black molding that runs the perimeter of the car. Thanks to a set of Koni shocks and Eibach springs the car has a great stance, and a set of 8mm wheel spacers in front give the car proper fitment all the way around.

Inside, a set of BMW's iconic Vader seats with power adjustments were installed up front and, in contrast to the vast majority of these cars, show barely a crease on the leather- let alone the rips and separating bolsters you see on many examples. One of the few downsides of a 1997 BMW M3 is the ugly 4-spoke airbag steering wheel BMW put in from the factory- thankfully, this example had that swapped out for a later 3-spoke design from a 1999 M3 which improves the look and feel dramatically.

The powerplant of the e36 M3- the S52- needs little introduction. This example has been upgraded with numerous parts from Dinan that improve power as well as drivability. The first thing you notice under the hood is a large Dinan strut brace across the engine bay- tasked with keeping the car's chassis from flexing under hard cornering. Up in front, a Dinan cold air intake is paired to a larger throttle body and improved mass airflow sensor and fuel pressure regulator, and it is then all tied together with a Stage 4 Dinan ECU map. According to Dinan, these modifications make for an increase of up to 38 horsepower and 29 lb-ft of torque, but the new software also gives you a 200rpm higher redline, improved throttle response, and the removal of the top speed limiter. Under the car, the suspension has also been treated to adjustable front camber plates, Megan Racing rear camber arms, a convertible cross brace, and a refresh on many of the bushings.

What makes this M3 so special is that it is in fantastic condition throughout and that the modifications were clearly installed with great care and consideration. Whereas many people will seek out a cheap part that may get the results they want, the previous owner of this car went to great lengths to buy the high-quality parts their car deserves. If you are looking for an M3 to drive and enjoy, while also watching the values climb in the coming years, you would be hard-pressed to find a better example than this coupe.
